Understanding Eczema in Children

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition marked by inflammation, dryness, and itching. It often flares up during certain times of the year – especially in spring and fall in Georgia – and its commonly triggered by environmental factors.

Common areas for flare-ups include:

  • Creases of the elbows and knees
  • Backs of arms and legs
  • Hands, feet, and neck
  • Behind the ears

Dr. Reese and Jennifer Rubner emphasize that eczema often goes hand-in-hand with allergies and asthma, and many children who experience one may also have the others.

"It's not the rash that itches, it's the itch that rashes"

What Causes Eczema Flare-Ups?

  • Seasonal allergies (pollen, ragweed)
  • Soaps or body washes with strong fragrances or drying ingredients
  • Perfumes or body sprays directly on the skin
  • Environmental irritants like dust, pet dander, or grass
  • Dietary triggers, especially in sensitive children (e.g., dairy)

Everyday Tips for Managing Eczema

Skin Care Routine:

  •  Use gentle, fragrance-free products like Dove, Aveeno, Cetaphil, or CeraVe
  • Avoid harsh soaps like Dial or Zest
  • Apply thick lotion immediately after bathing to lock in moisture
  • Consider Aquaphor or Vaseline on raw or dry patches at night

Bath Time:

  • Pat dry instead of rubbing
  • Apply lotion while skin is still damp
  • Keep water temperature lukewarm

Teen Tip: Teens are often resistant to daily moisturizing, but building a simple routine can prevent flare-ups.

Clothing & Scents:

  • Skip scented lotions and body sprays
  • Spray fragrance on clothing instead of directly on skin

When to Call Your Pediatrician

Persistent raw spots or worsening areas that don't respond to regular care may lead to infection. Broken skin increases the risk of bacteria entering the body.

Reach out to your provider if:

  • The eczema appears infected
  • Your child can't stop scratching
  • Over-the-counter treatments aren't helping

Allergies and Eczema: The Connection

Children with eczema often also experience seasonal or environmental allergies. These might include pollen, pet dander, dust mites, or foods.

Allergy symptoms can include:

  • Sneezing, congestion, post-nasal drip
  • Itchy, watery eyes
  • Skin irritation after playing outside

"The dog's not the allergen – but they're bringing in a lot of stuff that's not helping your skin."

Medication and Treatment Options

Topical Creams:

  • Use hydrocortisone (over-the-counter or prescription) sparingly
  • Avoid long-term use without medical guidance

Antihistamines:

  • Benadryl (first-generation) can help calm nighttime itching but may cause drowsiness
  • Zyrtec or Claritin (second-generation) are non-drowsy options, good for daily use during allergy seasons

"Zyrtec and Claritin work best when taken daily for the full season — not just when symptoms appear."

Other Options:

  • Singulair (Montelukast): May be used for children who don't respond to traditional antihistamines

Preventing Allergy Flares

  • Shower or rinse off after playing outside to remove pollen
  • Wash hands and change clothes after outdoor activities
  • Keep pets off beds if they've been outside
  • Use air filters during peak allergy seasons

When to See an Allergist

If your child has tried multiple treatments with little improvement, referral to an allergist may be necessary. They may recommend:

  • Allergy testing to identify triggers
  • Immunotherapy (allergy shots) for long-term relief

"Talk to your provider about when it's time to explore specialist care."

Final Thoughts: Build a Routine That Works

Managing eczema and allergies doesn't have to be overwhelming. With consistent care, gentle products, and the right medical support, your child can feel more comfortable year-round.

"Find a routine that works for your child — and stick with it."
